A recent visitor asked the question “What are Calvinism and Arminianism?”
It would take hours to completely answer your question; however, I will briefly describe Calvinism and Arminianism. Calvinism is so named after John Calvin, a Reformed theologian, who meticulously wrote and described the theology of the Reformation of Martin Luther and the others. The Reformation fostered Protestantism, which is not synonymous with the Reformation. Actually, a better name for Calvinism would be Reformed theology. Protestantism spawned all sorts of denominations such as Baptists etc.
The basic tenet or argument of Calvinism is that only by God’s grace, that is, God’s choosing His elect and giving them the grace so that they can have eyes to see and ears to hear the Gospel message so that they can become a new creature, that is, they are reborn. Then and only then can they have the love of Jesus Christ in the hearts because they are new creatures. Then and only then can they have the faith to believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. How can a person have the ability when he or she are dead in sin, as the apostle Paul says? If you are dead in sin, then you need to be resurrected or reborn. You cannot have true faith while you are dead in sin.
Arminianism is named after Jacobus Arminius who basically taught that man has freewill and can choose God or not. In other words, man’s freewill can accept or deny the Sovereign God thereby thwarting or destroying God’s plans and desires. Calvinism is God-centered and Arminianism is man-centered. Is God some lonely old man hoping that man will choose him?
